Catching Bass in extreme cold water can often be difficult for this warm water fish, but it is very possible you just have to change your approach!
We love lake fishing at the School of fFshing its "our jam" as the saying goes.
As smallmouth bass fishing is one of the best and most fun species to catch in the warmer months when the trout are in the doldrums of the summer heat, this fishery can be very productive and exciting.
But what about when the temps reverse and the water temp drop to extreme cold water can one still catch smallmouth bass in these conditions?
You bet here is a fast list of pro tips to get you into small bass in no time!
1. Slow Down Your Retrieve: When the water temperature drops, bass become less active. Slow down your retrieve to allow them time to react. Using slower presentations like jigs, Texas-rigged soft plastics, or suspending jerk baits can be very effective.
2.Target Deep Structure: In colder months, bass often move to deeper water where the temperature is more stable. Look for drop-offs, ledges, and deep points. Use a football jig or a deep-diving crank bait to reach these spots.
3.Use Finesse Techniques: Downsizing your baits and using finesse techniques like a shaky head or a dropshot can entice bites when bass are more lethargic. Light line and natural colors work best.
4.Focus on Warm Water Areas: Seek out areas that retain heat, such as shallow coves on sunny days, power plant discharges, or places with rock structure. These spots can attract more active bass.
5.Pay Attention to Weather Changes: A warming trend or a sunny day can trigger feeding activity in cold water. Fish actively during these windows and be ready to switch up your presentation when the bite turns on.
6.Choose the Right Bait: Opt for baits that produce subtle action, such as hair jigs, blade baits, or flat-sided crank baits. These presentations work well in cold water because they mimic the slow movements of baitfish in winter conditions.
7.Fish Slowly Around Cover: Bass will hold tight to cover, like logs, brush piles, or submerged vegetation, to conserve energy. Make multiple casts to the same area, and don’t be afraid to letyour bait sit still for a few extra seconds.
8.Experiment with Colors: In cold, clear water, try using more natural colors like green pumpkin, brown, or shad patterns. If the water is stained, opt for darker to increase visibility.
