1. Clean and Inspect Your Boat: Thoroughly Start by giving your boat a deep clean inside and out. Remove any debris, fishslime, and saltwater buildup. Pay special attention to the hull, bilge, and livewells. Once it’s clean, inspect for cracks, blisters, or any other damage that mighthave occurred during the season. This is the time to address minor repairs before they become major headaches.
2. Change the Oil and Filter: Just like your car, your boat needs regular oil changes to run smoothly. Old oilcan contain contaminants and moisture that lead to internal damage. Changing the oil and filter before winter storage helps prevent corrosion and extends the life of your engine.
3. Flush and Stabilize the Fuel System: Old fuel can gum up your engine, making it difficult to start when spring arrives.Add a quality marine fuel stabilizer to your fuel tank and then run the engine for a few minutes to allow the treated fuel to circulate through the system. This will prevent moisture buildup and keep your fuel fresh during storage.
4. Check the Propeller and Lower Unit: Remove the propeller to check for fishing line, weeds, or other debris wrapped around the shaft. This is also a great opportunity to inspect the lower unit for signs of leakage or wear. Reapply a thin coat of marine grease to the prop shaft before reinstalling.
5. Drain and Winterize the Plumbing System: if your boat has a freshwater system, ice maker, or live wells, be sure to drain and flush all water from the lines. Use non-toxic marine antifreeze to prevent any residual water from freezing and cracking the pipes
6. Charge and Store the Battery: Disconnect and remove your boat’s battery, then fully charge it before storage. Store the battery in a cool, dry place off the ground and connect it to a battery maintainer to prevent it from losing its charge over the winter.
7. Protect Your Boat with a Quality Cover: Invest in a high-quality boat cover to keep out dust, dirt, and moisture. A good cover not only keeps your boat clean but also prevents UV damage to the upholstery and electronics. Make sure the cover fits snugly to avoid sagging or tearing in windy conditions.
8. Inspect and Lubricate Moving Parts: Check steering cables, throttle controls, and any other moving parts for signs of wear or stiffness. Lubricate all pivot points and metal connections to keep them from rusting or seizing up during the off-season.
Remember that a little time and effort can save your boat form having major expenses down the road.
